LENT Photo # 39 'Serving'

Everyone's idea of serving will be different but there are some clues in the story of Jesus washing his disciples feet as to the nature of the endeavour... it includes words like humble, unexpected, challenging the recipient/s to accept the generosity or hospitality or action.... It's part of a subversive countercultural action that can break down barriers, create community, overcome struggles and model leadership of a specific type...
This Lent and this Thursday I am mindful of the power of serving as it offers glimpses of hope and points to 'another world being possible' while at the same time there's a place for strong leadership that gives direction and asks others to follow.
Anytime I've participated in a foot washing at a youth camp for Easter I have been struck by two things: many people's uncomfortability/vulnerability in accepting alongside the joy for some people in offering...
It's a tactile connection with the beginnings of the Easter story and sets a group on the journey of exploring each days events and their meaning...
