Worship Unplugged # 6 That's Not a Flame... This is a Flame PG

Reinventing worship can include symbols and traditions rediscovered or changed for a new day. Candles or a flame have been used for centuries, to foster reflection, as a symbol of warmth, love or spirit and as a visual focus. Mike Riddell/Mark Pierson have been the source of a couple of interesting ideas where this is concerned.
Under responsible supervision....
Use a large bowl and something heat resistant between it and any table or cloth. Fill the bowl with clay based kitty litter and soak this with methylated spirits... carefully ignite and you have a flame centrepiece that will burn for 45-60 minutes no trouble.
Jonny Baker from Grace faith community in the UK has been letting people know about the latest version from Steve the emergent kiwi which involved soaking large pummice stone in metho...

Please note both these ideas need to be well thought out, fire safe and under strict supervision and planning... fire is not to be played with!!

Both would probably suit the activity of participants tossing in a pinch of crushed sparkler powder symbolising a 'confession' or 'owning up' with the intro suggesting that the sparkles represent forgiveness or grace.
