Poignant, clever, funny or deep stories can be found at the pointy end of every bookstore!
Most clever childrens authors are dealing with universal stories and do well with subtle telling of the tale in a way that lets the point dawn on the reader!! There are great fables, issues of relationship, self esteem, indigenous and intergenerational stories.
Julie Pinazza's "Worship is For Everyone" is a terrific resource with guides on how to use a selection of great books as examples...
Examples [of which there are hundreds]
Wilfed McDonald Gordon Partridge
Lukes Way of Looking
The Man Who Loved Boxes
Wand Linda's Underpants
Mr Peabody's Apples.....
You don't have to buy all the books, check out the wealth of resources at your local public library!!

I'd also recommend Shaun Tan's books, particularly The Red Tree.
