"It's My Turn to Do Devotions!!" is a workshop topic reflecting on how we might best help young people shape faith, ask good honest questions and explore their own spirituality in a way that we can be seen as helpful, in tune and able to be inclusive!!
One way would be to avoid/reject/modify the traditional 10 minute story or object lesson approach.
This most often equates to: an story struggling for relevance; guilt about the imperative of passing on the faith; poor preparation; focus on our own perspective; no time for genuine dialogue; and limited chance of connecting with young peoples real needs. If it works where you are 'go for it' but are you sure?
What about setting aside whole programs/arranging a seperate extra meeting and spending the equivalent of a full group time exploring issues, questions, biblical stuff [which has been worked through with the young people as something they'd like to/need to talk about. This opens up the possibility for the use of songs, movies or snippets of movies, guest facilitators and/or stories with the time to explore them more fully!!
Even basic exercises like a newsprint sheet timeline of the basic biblical narrative and meaning, everything the kids know about Christmas/Easter or some worksheet based sharing and significant moment timelines can open up plenty.
