"Lent Event" 2011

"Lent Event" is a brilliant and inspired story of one person's idea being supported and encouraged by a faith community's key leaders as God's activity in [and desire for] the world finding a way to be exercised. The idea is to breathe life into the faith practice of 'giving up...' for Lent and by living simply in some way, give the money saved to change lives somewhere in the world where that's needed... in fact through a few chosen projects!!
Lent is that period from Ash Wednesday through to Easter Sunday [40 days not counting Sundays] and encourages a time of reflection and preparation.
I particularly like the part of the story where the Uniting Church expression of partnerships with churches across the world known as 'Uniting World' quickly sees the inspired nature of this and joins the project of one person after hundreds of churches and thousands of individuals have signed up.
The other aspect of Lent Event are the resources for worship or personal reflection which resource your time... get onboard by checking it out here.

'Bluesfest' Easter

There's been a bit of a delay in my blogging about Easter as I became very ill while I was away BUT otherwise what a brilliant Festival!!
The idea began some 3 years ago after the frustration of a 2 day conference encouraging new forms of missional church and some of the ego driven 'nutbars' I encountered at a 2 day Brian McLaren event. I decided not to attend anymore talkfests about mission but to be engaged in it instead. As a Consultant this exacerbated the issue because you spend plenty of time trying to convince, cajole and encourage others to adapt and change accordingly without necessarily being grounded in your own action!!
I am a huge fan of a quality Easter Camp but when our suggestion of a Sydney metro based intentionally multi-cultural camp was not taken up by those networks an opportunity arose to think differently about inviting a group of young adults to try an experiment.
For that age group you'd have to do an enormous amount of work to create an event... why not go to one that's already created and form temporary community in that space. If only a few sign up, it's still on because it'll still draw a crowd and it can be research for future.
I chose 'Bluesfest' because of the quality of the event and the bill where they stretch the definition for mainstage to draw a young and diverse crowd alongside longtime blues fans...

Check out the artist list and pics and fallout here but it's hard to top:
Crowded House
The Fray
The Break
John Butler Trio
The Flood
Jessica Mauboy
Kev Carmody
[3] tapings of Rockwiz
Buena Vista Social Club
Jack Johnson
Jen Cloher
and many more

Bands don't start until midday giving plenty of spare time for what I suggested as a basic approach to group discussion like a. reflecting on what day of Easter it was and b. what does that mean here and what is 'good news' for people in this context?
I prepared a reflection each day including a song [some by feature artists] a painting and a brief reflection on a reading for that day.
I was too unwell to participate in these conversations but Jeri and Naomi were given mp3 players to listen to each song and spent a few afternoons in the beer garden talking about the material.
The no alcohol, no noise rules in the camping ground were rules honoured by their breaking but the 2am and 4am karaoke serenades were made worse by my feeling unwell.
The girls made good friends with our neighbours and there was a great vibe in the Festival ground itself. We were 200m from the entrance so also the thump of the music went until 12.30am.
There was such a richness to the music on offer across 5 or 6 different venues and the food vendors, bar and markets were all top notch. I found the experience of a number of acts to be quite transcendent in really low key ways and the Easter weekend was on peoples minds even if a little dismissively.
My own 'Easter' moment came when I had almost forgotten Kev Carmody was playing and he did his Kev and friends set focused around the 'Cannot Buy My Soul' tribute album. I had been to hospital emergency, was on antibiotics and was energy-less but as Kev spoke about the bloke upstairs and actually sang 'Cannot Buy My Soul' and there were tears... I hadn't gone looking for overt references, they were there all weekend in subtle and obvious ways in the values laden music of so many bands and the effervesence of the crowds!!

More soon... but essentially... huge potential!!

"Bluesfest" Easter Weekend

I'm off to "Bluesfest" this Easter [with Naomi and Jerri at this stage but who knows what other last minuters] which will be quite different but is exciting!! Basically it's a continuation of my desire to be engaged in my context and the 'missio dei' by letting 'Bluesfest' organise my Easter so I and others can reflect on the story 'in the marketplace of ideas' and genuinely ask ourselves 'what is the good news?' or how does it make sense in that place and for these people!!
I look forward to learning that I'm asking the wrong questions or being surprised or whatever really!! But I will say that if my life and faith don't make sense at 'Bluesfest', then they don't make sense anywhere.
I find music inspiring, transcendent and transformative... just plain fun and am really looking forward to the big names and the small names on the list. There will also be [3] episodes of Rockwiz over the weekend on their national tour. I'm interested in the sense of community, age range and how they stretch the definition of 'Blues and Roots' to build crowd for this event.
I look forward to comparing and contrasting my experience of 'Greenbelt' in 2008 with this coming weekend!!
It's just a bonus that I'll catch 'Crowded House', 'The Fray', 'The Break','Jeff Beck' and others. Stay tuned for post event reflections!!

"Magnificent" U2

Had I been speaking at an Easter Camp this year I would have designed a reflection around the U2 song which will be their next single out on May 4, the song "Magnificent," one of the three or so tracks I think present moving and meaningful reflections on life from the individual perspective in all it's dilemas about meaning, choices and relationships.

Check out the intimate Boston performance here

"Magnificent"

Magnificent
Magnificent
I was born
I was born to be with you
In this space and time
After that and ever after I haven't had a clue
Only to break rhyme
This foolishness can leave a heart black and blue
Only love, only love can leave such a mark
But only love, only love can heal such a scar
I was born
I was born to sing for you
I didn’t have a choice but to lift you up
And sing whatever song you wanted me to
I give you back my voice
From the womb my first cry, it was a joyful noise…

Only love, only love can leave such a mark
But only love, only love can heal such a scar
Justified till we die, you and I will magnify
The Magnificent
Magnificent
Only love, only love can leave such a mark
But only love, only love unites our hearts
Justified till we die, you and I will magnify

The Magnificent
Magnificent
Magnificent

Easter Camp WA

Hey, things have been a bit quiet here as I've been flat out preparing for Easter Camp at Logue Brook 90-100 mins south of Perth in Western Australia!! I am sitting here in Perth tonight with Camp done and dusted and it's been a great time!! Maybe even some of the mob are checking out the 'Pumphouse'... in coming days I'll add a run down on my input, media and group activities plus a flickr collection of the pictures I have [about 2% of those taken on the weekend!!
In the lead up to Camp I felt done with the 'HOPE' theme I'd worked on as the needed and appropriate theme for the Hunter 2005 and a sensible development for Far North Queensland in 2007. I also pitched "Everything Must Change" or "Everything Changes" as a build on my central themes but allowing me to take a different direction [and use some of the excellent thoughts in Brian McLaren's book. I must write to Brian and thank him for writing out what I've been shaping for four years now and putting it all between 2 covers!!
The central ideas revolve around:
1. ASKING 'what is your picture of Jesus?' as a logical check in and starting point [and the most important question Jesus asked] we explore THE CROSS as a symbol of HOPE as Jesus showing solidarity with us in life in all it's aspects.
2. Trying to get a handle on EASTER SATURDAY without a Sunday and recognising that Jesus is with us in the tough times, pain and struggles in life.
3. ASKING 'what did Jesus talk most about?' we explored THE WORLD LIVED ACCORDING TO THE VALUES OF GOD and our call to join God's mission in the world and grow our faith, communities and personal gifts in giving ourselves in servanthood as Jesus' mandated by his own example
4. We turned our attention to HOME and gave people a chance to share their experience, learning and hope and TO WRITE A LETTER TO GOD to try to offer something concrete to remember in response!!

More in coming days....

My reflections tonight come after a night of long sleep [and snoring] and a day in the city of Perth.... my thanks go to Rick, Helen, Bindi, Em and Gilly for their welcome and hospitality!!
My thanks also to the leaders and campers who were warm, affirming, open and had a great time over the weekend! I enjoyed them sharing their stories and taking time to let me know how they were going with our theme... and they excelled themselves with a 'Meaningful Soles' exercise and worship space in telling their stories through the display of a significant pair of shoes. See their pictures and some explanation of what we did soon at www.meaningfulsoles.blogspot.com!!

OK...
More soon...
