"My Name is Earl"

I wrote about this show in January and finally it hits our screens in Oz this week... Thursday at 8 on 7!! I suspect Earl will be an acquired humour and will quickly fade to a graveyard time and that will annoy me because I'll like it... typical!!

The premise is that everytime something good happens for Earl there's something bad right around the corner... maybe because of all the bad things he has done...
So its time to turn that around and make up for all those things...
Earl makes a list and sets about righting those wrongs!!

Will the trailer trash American setting make sense here in anything other than a 'Dukes of Hazzard' kind of way... I'm keen to discover!!

ZOO TV

OK so I can finally upgrade from the old VHS copy of one of the most mindblowing concerts ever... especially having been there on the night!!

U2's study in values, the TV generation and the power of that media was a gem!!.... From the big screen TV's, substation under the stage and the german trabant cars suspended overhead to Bono's Macphisto character and the nightly satellite phone call and tuning in to local tv...

U2 Watch

Here we go....

Word is that it shouldn't be too long before we get more news on the postponed Vertigo Tour dates. Arthur Fogel from TNA, the international promoters of U2’s Vertigo Tour told U2.com this week, “We've been working hard to get news for ticket holders and we hope to have some answers/an announcement within the next few weeks”.
We know many U2 fans are trying to make plans for the year ahead, but with this in from TNA, hopefully your wait is close to over.

George Gregan Plays 120th Rugby Union Test

Credit where its due:
Leadership, presence, confidence, success, defence, composure, organisation...
George has made almost every post a winner in a highly successful international rugby career!!
All this despite a less than perfect pass, a stutter after picking the ball up, a tendency to step back from the ruck before passing and therefore putting pressure on his outside players... and very few attacking snipes of his own [especially since Owen Finegan left the national team]!

The team is more composed when he's in charge, they choose less crazy options but still not always the right ones... its a conundrum but at least the change of coach has meant an excuse to rotate potential successors in and out of game time in coming matches all in the lead up to World Cup 2007 in France!!

"THANK GOD YOU'RE HERE!"

Australia's prolific comedy team from 'Working Dog' [The Castle, The Dish, The Panel, Frontline etc] have scored a quiet ratings winner for Oz's TEN network... aimed squarely at the 18-30 demographic!!

It's a simple preimse done well [the secret to any successful creative endeavour] and could be adapted for youth groups and camps...

On the show the stage has a central MC area, one judge who comments on each skit and decides a winner, and two side stages behind screens.

Each week there are at least four guest performers.

At each turn the guest comes out 'in a costume' for a skit they have no other clues about. They walk through a door to the staging area left or right in turn and are greeted by one of up to four regular clued in actors who begins "thank God you're here!" and slowly they have a few one liners to feed to the actor that leave them hanging with a clue to the story but no real details.

So the humour is derived from improv and how the guest deals with the wobblies thrown their way by succeeding clues. Very funny most of the time [except for Frank Woodley in the season finale].

At a youth ministry activity you'd need:
  • A small collection of leaders or group members who could construct a skit given a rough outline and a few clues that get dropped in the conversation
  • A collection of props and clothes from the local op shop
  • A set of pre written skit scenarios
  • an MC
  • a Judge
  • Ability to set up for a move from one side of the stage or performance space to the other OR a quick change crew to put out very basic props and visuals
  • A data projector or TV could provide still shots to enhance the props

Later in the year I might have space to sketch out some scenarios which could be used. One key is that the skit participants work cooperatively with a spirit of fun and a desire to 'go along with' the guests improv while still dropping in contradictions or info as the skit unfolds but if thats done vindictively or with too much negativity it won't work!!

For an inevitably more eloquent and complete description of the new show check out my new favourite research tool wikipedia here at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thank_God_You

iPod War

The latest musical fun in a few select Sydney pubs seems to be a competition where punters are invited to program a 20 minute playlist of their choice on their ipod... these are signed up and played so patrons can vote on which selection they liked most... winner gets a cash prize!!

This would be easy to do as a youth ministry activity with choice of one or more songs or as a way to fill the background at a camp where CDs were played. Punters name a song each, you burn it to a CD/s and play the selection over the weekend.

You could ask young people to choose a song and develop a flash or powerpoint audio-visual and award prizes for various aspects plus end up with some useful stuff for reflection/discussion...

Hooters Family Restaurant

After an ill-fated attempt at inner western Sydney it seems that America's famous 'family dining experience' is on its way to Parramatta and the Shire over the next 6-12 months!!
Much like Lonestar, Hogs Breathe, Planet Hollywood etc the menu is a mix of wings, ribs, fries and soft drink with an emphasis on highly qualified waitresses!!
It'll be intersting to see if the fun cheerleader style translates to Aussie culture of if the behaviour of a hromonal lunatic fringe drives it out of business again... maybe not the venue for your next youth ministry leadership team celebration!!

"Suburban Songbook" Bob Evans

Jebediah's Kevin Mitchell hits the road solo with an album under the name Bob Evans [supporting Josh Pyke] and taking in 'Slendour in the Grass' in July at Byron Bay!!

The voice is familiar and the music is interesting in that male version of Claire Bowditch, Missy Higgins etc etc kind of way...

I first heard "Don't You Think It's Time" [the CD single] on radio and Kev talking about how his musical inspirations had done something genius by the time they were 25 so at 23 it 'was time' to do some writing and recording and see what he could come up with... its a good story!

I had already been thinking about an alt.worship space around the theme 'Time and Space' so now I have my theme music...

Anyhow Jebediah fans wouldn't be disappointed with alter ego Bob Evans work!!

U2 Watch

check u2.com for this weekends apology that arrangements are taking time to lock in... if you had tickets for Sydney's Friday night U2 show I'd lock in 24th November but I'd still cancel everything for three weeks either side!!

Row M Seat 30 "Chumscrubber"

From the Triple J regular Mailing:

J MAIL GIVEAWAY: Chumscrubber film preview.
Chumscrubber is a new indie American teen movie set squarely in the Californian suburbs. It's a surreal, cautionary tale about Dean Stiffle, an alienated teenager, forced to confront the disconnection in his life after the death of his best friend.
It's dark, often funny and unpredictable film, sandwiched somewhere between comedy and drama, and classic teen movies Donnie Darko and Thumbsucker.
The cast is impressive too, including Billy Elliot's Jamie Bell, Thumbsucker's Lou Taylor Pucci and screen veteran Glenn Close.

"One" Mary J Blige and U2

I have posted about this track before BUT after conversation this week with colleague Nicole I saw the new clip this morning and its great!!

This song is relevant to world poverty, unity, globalisation, worship, hope, discussion, reflection, as a backing for prayer, movement, etc etc!!

Bono had a rockstar moment in describing it as "the now definitive version of One" after the Grammys earlier this year!!

"Brand New Day" Alex Lloyd Acoustic

Alex Lloyd has called in another Balmain boy with a great clip for this acoustic reworking from his self titled album. David Wenham rides a bus with Alex.

The acoustic reworkings are sold as a package with the self titled album and seperately. The track on "Dancing With the Stars" while a professional couple danced was quite brilliant from the fatman in a thinner man's body!!

"World, Hold On" Bob Sinclar

It's amazing what you can catch up with when you're home for the weekend!!
This dance track from Bob Sinclar would have been handy two weeks ago when speaking at a Camp with the theme... "It's Not Rocket Science!"
The largely ambient track has a young boy being inspired and eventually building his own rocket in his bedroom and successfully launching into the galaxy while the "world, hold on... its gonna be OK" rythmn fills the background...

Available for grainy low res download with Quicktime Pro from his own website www.bobsinclar.com

"Living the Questions"

This 12 week DVD and web based small group set of materials promotes itself as an alterntaive to Alpha [which acknowledges its own conservative slant]. It seesm to me that LtQ makes room for exploration and some 'shades of grey'...

The Youth Unit is buying a set to pilot/share/promote to groups who may want to give it a try!!

Innovative Resources

Innovative Resources from Victoria in Oz have some great card or book based resources for promoting discussion and fitting in with any 'Assets' or Resilience appraoch to youth ministry.

I have been impressed by the 'Signpost' set of cards seen some years ago at a Youth Workers Inservice. We have just ordered a set of 'Deep Speak' Question cards for promoting significant discussion.

Big Dell has 12th Bundy and Coke spiked

Obviously Wendell Sailor's 12th drink after the win over the Brumbies three weeks ago was spiked with Cocaine [if the A sample is to be believed] from his recent random drug test!!

How else could we explain the latest developments in Big Dell's career. Pumphouse assumes that either Wendell's B sample will turn up negative OR the drink spiking theory will come to the fore...

BECAUSE NO IDIOT WHO HAS BLOTTED THEIR COPYBOOK AT LEAST TWICE BEFORE THAT WE KNOW WOULD BE STUPID ENOUGH TO TAKE RECREATIONAL DRUGS AT THE HEIGHT OF THE SUPER 14 SEASON... AM I RIGHT!!

"Blue Like Jazz" Donald Miller

After hearing an extract from this book [read by colleague Andrew Palmer] it struck me that it was the kind of humour I enjoy reading!! The subheading "Non-religious thoughts on Christian Spirituality" indicates that its an exploratory style of writing observations about stuff that happens... I will post some snippets and what I am liking about it as I read!!

"Churchless Faith" Alan Jamieson

As ever I had noticed this resource and was drawn back to explore more when I read where Jonny Baker had heard Jamieson speak...
Book is based on research and interviews with young adults who have left the church and maintain a faith. Most had a leadership role and/or were engaged in study for ministry at one point and many were also involved for up to 15 years. It looks an interesting study for connection with a generation who fit this description but would connect with people who are simply outside the experience of church...

Advent Installations

OK...
I am interested in setting up an Installation/s for Christmas 2006 in a public space or a hall the public will happily access over the four weeks leading up to Christmas. It would include many mediums with a focus on using contemporary images and forms to depict some of the key advent themes. It would hopefully be a contrast to the commercialism and busy-ness of the Christmas shopping season!!
It would suit me to try this in familiar territory in Newcastle/Hunter area so who is up for it? Who would like to help?

We could have a cover charge if we were in a closed venue and this could go to a cause of our choosing... Sudanese refugees airfares fund, Fred Hollows Foundation, Unity and International Mission 'Gifts of Love'...

Just add a comment here if you might like to be involved and I'll talk to you about that!!

Pearl Jam live on Letterman

Pearl Jam will appear live on Letterman's "Late Show" 4th May [local date] and do a concert outside in 54th St in Manhattan to promote their new self titled album that's released here in Oz on Saturday!!
Rolling Stone seemed very positive about the stripped back style and how it was truly a band collaboration in the writing and workshopping... the concert will be webcast on the Late Show site http://www.cbs.com/latenight/lateshow/live_on_letterman/

U2charist

Two Options used in the US:
[though I would play around with the purpose at each point, limiting words used and bank on images and title slides to help people work through the experience.
As well as Eucharist these could be used with other kinds of responsive actions or a shared meal.

ONE:
Opening Hymn: Pride (in the Name of Love)
Opening Sentences and Collect
Gloria: Gloria
(learned that it's not the best instumental. Instumentals are best kept in Preludes, Communion Hymns or Postludes)
Gospel
Sermon
Sermon Response: One
Prayers of the People: Peace on Earth
Confession: When Love Comes to Town (with BB King)
Absolution
Offertory: Love and Peace or Else
Eucharistic Canon: (Enriching Our Worship or New Zealand)

Opening Hymn: Mysterious Ways
Opening Sentences and Collect
Gloria or Song of Praise: Elevation ("You elevate my Soul!")
Gospel
Sermon
Sermon Response: One

Offertory: Sunday Bloody Sunday
Eucharistic Canon: (Enriching Our Worship or New Zealand)
Communion Hymns: Grace and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
Prayer After Recieving

Recessional: Where the Streets Have No Name
Postludes: All Because of You, I Am Beautiful Day

U2 continued

So, what songs would I include:

"Pride [In the Name of Love]" as a call to worship
"" as a backing for a visual opening prayer
"Peace on Earth" as a part of the input alongside a 7 minute edit of Bono speaking
at the US 2006 National Prayer Breakfast in Washington
"Where the Streets Have No Name"as part of the prayers for others
"All Because of You" clip from New York as part of sending out
"Yahweh" as sending out blessing

Other good choices depending on your aim:
"Walk On" about discipleship
"40" for prayer and reflection
"With or Without You" especially as an Easter reflection
"Beautiful Day" about having hope even when the sky has fallen

U2 Easter Eucharist

The local ABC website carried a story and link to CNN.com about several episcopal churches across the States using a postcard mailout campaign and U2 music driven liturgy to attract interested worshippers this Easter. Having done similar things I am interested in this and the raft of recent 'young people rediscovering faith' articles which pop up in the print media. For more on the U2 liturgy check out http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Music/04/14/u2.eucharist.ap/index.html?section=cnn_showbiz

I wondered if the original some months back was drawn from "Get Up Off Your Knees: Preaching the U2 Catalogue" but it certainly has interesting possibilities either way... Trevor J's 5 week exploration of U2's music at Neutral Bay drew someone from the neighbourhood in off the street just about every week!!

As ever the nay sayers will think what they will 'rich, rockers, swearing, who are you worshipping... etc etc'.... whatever!!

I'm happy to become all things to all people in order that I might at least encounter a few... not sure who does the saving?

JESUS Easter Picture

Jonny Baker has alerted us in recent years to the Ben Bell created annual Easter Card. It's letterbox dropped to locals each year near St Stephens Cannonbury Rd to advertise worship options. Great idea using gifts and creativity locally to inspire and catch the eye!!
Last years appeared on this blog as well... the police mug shot of the guy in an army jacket with 'Jesus of Nazareth' on the name card.

Reinventing Judas!!

GREAT SPIN FROM NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC!!

Wow!! Unless your family have been long term buyers, when was the last time you thought about buying a subscription!!
They have created some great publicitity today with the release of their edition about some new manuscripts showing Judas in quite a different light... as co-conspirator helping the grand plans come together!! Which isn't without reference in John's gospel!!

SMH
By Linda Morris, Religious Affairs ReporterApril 7, 2006

"A 1700-year-old papyrus manuscript suggests history has misjudged the greatest villian of Christianity: Judas was under orders when he betrayed Jesus.
The only known surviving copy of the lost gospel of Judas portrays the treacherous disciple as a loyal deputy acting at the behest of his leader.
In fact, Judas sold Jesus out as an act of obedience not treachery, thereby fulfilling his theological destiny. Key passages from the third or fourth century Coptic manuscript were released by its publisher, the National Geographic Society, last night, a week before Easter, the holiest time of the Christian calendar.
The society, which is rumoured to have purchased publishing rights for more than $1 million, plans magazine articles, television specials and book deals amid concerns about the ethics of ancient acquisitions.
The society's panel of scholars has submitted the document to radiocarbon dating, ink analysis and spectral imaging and has declared it authentic.
The gospel of Judas is believed to be the work of gnostic Christians, a stream of Christian thinking declared heretical by early church fathers. It is a companion text to ancient scriptures unearthed in 1945, which have formed the basis of some assertions in Dan Brown's controversial bestseller The Da Vinci Code.
Australian biblical scholars said the document would be likely to provide a window on early Christianity, but did not threaten Christian teachings because while it was old, it did not date to the time of the Bible's Gospels.
"The text bears witness that to some people Judas was a misunderstood character," said Dr Malcolm Choat, a specialist in early Christianity at Macquarie University. "It fills in the picture but it doesn't make the picture."
But the Coptic Orthodox Church dismissed the document as "non-Christian babbling resulting from a group of people trying to create a false 'amalgam' between the Greek mythology and Far East religions with Christianity … They were written by a group of people who were aliens to the main Christian stream of the early Christianity," the church's theological leader, Metropolitan Bishoy, told the Herald.
"These texts are neither reliable nor accurate Christian texts, as they are historically and logically alien to the main Christian thinking and philosophy of the early and present Christians."
The Judas gospel is a third or fourth century Coptic manuscript discovered in the desert near El Minya, Egypt, in the 1970s. It was sold to a dealer in illicit antiquities and languished in a safe deposit box in the US before falling into the hands of a Swiss foundation.
The Bible says Judas betrayed Jesus to the Romans for a purse of 30 pieces of silver in the Garden of Gethsemane. He later hung himself.
According to limited extracts of the gospel of Judas offered to the Herald, Jesus explains Judas his role in the crucifixion: "You will exceed all of them. For you will sacrifice the man that clothes me."
In other key passages released to the public, Jesus confides: "Step away from the others and I shall tell you the mysteries of the kingdom. It is possible for you to reach it, but you will grieve a great deal."
For his role Judas would be despised by the other disciples: "You will be cursed by the other generations and you will come to rule them." The gospel ends: "They [the arresting party] approached Judas and said to him. 'What are you doing? You are Jesus's disciple'. Judas answered them as they wished. And he received some money and handed over to him.
As well as the gospel of Judas, the newly discovered 66-page document also contained a text titled James, a letter of Peter to Philip, and a fragment of a fourth text scholars are provisionally calling Book of Allogenes."

Ideas for Easter 2006 #1

Artworks
A few years ago I was part of a small gathering of young adults who spent the Easter weekend at on retreat while staying on the property at Terrigal Uniting Church where we engaged in some of the significant worship experiences across the weekend and contributed to Sunday evening.
Over that weekend a local artist's work [who had been engaged over preceeding months] was used at the front of the worship space in different ways on different days.

On Good Friday we were invited to line up and stroll past the painting which broadly depicted a cricified Jesus in charcoals. We were offered a candle and a single rose. As you held the candle up to the picture it revealed a number of images in the background and a red colouring to some aspects. It was a very powerful space and activity.

On Saturday... nothing was up the front including the removal of all furniture and the cross that had been built and raised by attenders on Friday.

On Sunday night the vivid yellow picture was the Emmaus story and each of these pictures were a different interpretation on a famous picture from art history.

ALL OF THIS and some other examples I've seen reminds me of the power of the visual... whether represented as movies, audio-visuals, artspaces, sculptures etc... who has the gifts, who do you know or who is in your area who could be encouraged to provide you with artworks for reflection, public or private hall spaces for 'walk throughs' or practice of spiritual disciplines etc ??

We didn't get there this year BUT I harbour a thought of doing a public sacred space artspace in Newcastle for the weeks of Lent and opening it to the wider community to come and experience Lent/Easter in this way [not unlike Cityside Baptist Church in Auckland]
http://cityside.org.nz/node/22?PHPSESSID=89ce876ce5cd2293e4000195099ea5b9

I pictured a space set up with stations not unlike a display at the Powerhouse Museum where easels have background, questions, credits etc... looped music plays in more than one space, artworks or installations track you through aspects of the Easter story and you can spend as little or as much time as you like and redo the space also. You get a handout at the end not the beginning.

There might be reference to a website with a handful of worship services listed 'if people wanted to check this out further', websites or other similar resources so people could continue their reflections.

Music
Some tunes I'd use this Easter....
"Given to Fly" Pearl Jam
"Better Way" Ben Harper
"The Wonder" Alex Lloyd
"Hope & Validation" Bernard Fanning
"Ugly" Sugababes

Peter Garrett for PM

Well,
I left well enough alone until the following article carried on into the media today... then Peter was on the Political Forum on ABC 702 Radio...

The thing that people seem to miss about him [with the 'can a rock star be Aussie PM?' stuff is that he is a person: of intengrity; with knowledge, legal skills, a good mind, plain speaking and honest!! Not just some "rock star"!!
Midnight Oil was a different animal when it comes to music, they ran their own race, flew in the face of popularity, dissed Countdown and Mollie Meldrum, went independent, stayed home from the US for family when worldwide success beckoned after "Diesel and Dust" etc

Now Peter Garrett is quietly working away as a Federal MP, sure to eventually be tested with a Ministry and in doing so is slowly building a case for a long future in public life as a significant figure in Aussie history!! As PM? We could do a lot worse!!

I'm sure Peter has his moments, foibles and faults... but in the brief moments of conversation I have had, he showed himself to be the kind of humble, self effacing and uncomfortably ordinary sort of bloke who would appeal as a fair and honest political Leader.

Can Peter Garrett rock the Lodge? Some see a future PM
SMH 25th March 2006

COULD the former Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett be prime minister?
As the ALP seeks a long-term answer to its leadership squabbles, an unusually quiet and unassuming member for Kingsford Smith has emerged as a potential future leader after barely 18 months in Parliament.
It may not be a big stretch of the imagination, considering the political transformation in the US of Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
One senior Labor official said: "Peter has impressed a lot of people with his policy brain. He needs time as a shadow minister so he can get key portfolio experience, but there are people in the party who see that potential [to be leader]."
An experienced party powerbroker, Bob McMullan, one of Mr Garrett's closest parliamentary colleagues, also responded positively: "Leading the ALP? It's not out of the question.
"I can't see a Labor government in the future without a big role for Peter as a policy player. Whether he gets beyond that is still too early to tell. He is an innovative policy thinker and I expect he will play a big role.
"What progressive parties need are leaders who give people hope that things might be better, that they can change the country for the better if there is a change of government. Peter has that quality but leadership requires more than that. Until people are really tested you can't really tell."
The Greens leader, Bob Brown, is unequivocal: "Absolutely electable. The Labor Party would do extremely well to take Peter on as leader. The rank and file would be delighted with the news. What they need is not just a power politician but one with a social conscience."
And Mr Garrett? "There is no way I am going to buy into your very eloquent hypothetical," he told the Herald during a wide-ranging interview about his budding new career.
